Winners
1. The Dwarves
The dwarves came out of this episode looking like the biggest winners. They have a formidable city, sensible leadership, and an overall sense of unity that gives them the sort of strength to rival that of the elves. One could argue that the dwarves might even have the upper hand at the moment given Elrond’s request for assistance. Add to that the secret the dwarves are hiding, which seems to be possession of a Silmaril, and the argument becomes even more plausible. In any case, the dwarves are in great shape.
2. Bronwyn
Bronwyn will forever have the distinct honor of being the first to kill an orc in this show. She proved her bravery by fighting the orc in order to save her son and came out of the whole ordeal with an undeniable credibility. I imagine she’s somewhat of a de facto leader among the townspeople now.
3. Elrond
Elrond’s favor with the High King -at least partially gained from ostensibly convincing Galadriel to return to Valinor- earns him a position on Celebrimbor’s important project. He expertly manages to talk his way back into Prince Durin’s favor despite having ghosted him for the last 20 years.
Losers
1. Galadriel
One might say that Galadriel surviving thus far makes her a winner; however, having barely survived the dangers of the sea, she now has to contend with strangers (possibly pirates) in an elf-hostile environment. She’s still very much stranded far from home.
2. Arondir
Arondir will live, but for now, he’ll have to contend with whatever many orcs underground and alone. How much of a loser he is will depend on whether he was captured or not.
3. The Humans of Hordern’s Neighboring Town
Forced to vacate their homes due to the impending orc raid, Hordern’s neighbors are now essentially on the run. Without any elvish oversight, they’re disorganized and defenseless in the face of looming threats. Look for things to get much worse for the humans before they get any better.
